Poker • Baccarat controversy
A multi-format poker career and a baccarat dispute that should be understood separately.
Biography
Phil Ivey’s poker biography spans tournament and high-stakes cash play. The WSOP profile describes his early development in Atlantic City and his first bracelet in 2000. His reputation is broader than one televised hold’em hand: different poker formats require different forms of judgment.
The same profile recounts his 2006 heads-up limit hold’em match against Andy Beal, played in the context of the professional group known as the Corporation. Public accounts of that match describe the stakes and outcome; they do not supply a complete hand-by-hand ledger.
Ivey’s baccarat edge-sorting litigation belongs to a separate part of his story. It concerned the way cards and procedures were used in a casino game, not reading an opponent in poker. Keeping those contexts separate helps explain both his achievements and the controversy without pretending they demonstrate one universal strategy.
| Career milestone | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| 2000 | First WSOP bracelet, in pot-limit Omaha. |
| 2006 | High-stakes heads-up match with Andy Beal. |
| 2017 | UK Supreme Court decision in the edge-sorting dispute. |
The game behind the story
Start with poker formats and hand rules before comparing decisions across hold’em, Omaha or lowball. The format determines what a strong hand means and how betting works.
