1989 champion • Multi-format career
The 24-year-old who stopped Johnny Chan’s Main Event streak.
Biography
Phil Hellmuth’s public poker identity began with a striking championship moment: he defeated Johnny Chan in the 1989 Main Event, ending Chan’s attempt at a third consecutive title. Hellmuth was 24 at the time, and the result introduced a new figure into a game associated with older established names.
His later record includes achievements outside no-limit hold’em. The WSOP’s 2012 Razz report documents a bracelet in a low-hand stud format, a useful reminder that poker expertise is not defined by one set of hand rankings or one television format.
Hellmuth joined the Poker Hall of Fame in 2007. His outspoken table persona is part of his public profile, but it should not replace discussion of the decisions. The 1989 final hand is a better entry point: a pocket pair faced a suited ace, with the outcome determining a championship.

The game behind the story
Start with poker formats and hand rules before comparing decisions across hold’em, Omaha or lowball. The format determines what a strong hand means and how betting works.
