Gin rummy • Three Main Events
An extraordinary card-game career whose achievements cannot be separated from its difficult ending.
Biography
Stu Ungar developed his reputation in gin rummy before becoming one of poker’s most recognizable champions. The WSOP biography describes his early New York card-playing life and his move into high-level poker. His Main Event victories came in 1980, 1981 and 1997.
The 1997 title is especially memorable because it returned him to the center of the game many years after his first two wins. Its final hand offers a concise lesson in how a weaker starting kicker can be overtaken by the board’s development.
Ungar’s life also involved addiction and a premature death in 1998. A biography that lists only the titles would miss an essential part of the story. His skill at cards is a historical achievement; it is not evidence that winning protects a player from serious personal or financial harm.
| Career milestone | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| 1980–1981 | Two consecutive Main Event titles. |
| 1997 | Third Main Event title. |
| 1998 | Died after a life marked by addiction. |
The game behind the story
Start with poker formats and hand rules before comparing decisions across hold’em, Omaha or lowball. The format determines what a strong hand means and how betting works.
