Online qualifier • 2003 champion
An online qualifier whose Main Event win changed poker’s public imagination.
Biography
Chris Moneymaker’s 2003 Main Event victory gave poker a story that new players could immediately understand: a player reached a major live championship through an online qualifier and defeated an established final opponent, Sam Farha. The WSOP profile identifies an $86 qualifying route.
That route is part of the biography, not the cost of winning the championship for an average entrant. A satellite grants a seat; it does not remove the difficulty of the tournament that follows. Travel, later entries and unsuccessful attempts also belong in any realistic account of participation costs.
Moneymaker entered the Poker Hall of Fame in 2019. His final championship hand and his famous bluff earlier in the heads-up encounter are different episodes. The companion page examines the recorded final hand, keeping that distinction clear rather than blending two dramatic moments into one.
| Career milestone | Why it matters |

| 2003 | Online qualification followed by Main Event victory. |

The game behind the story
Start with poker formats and hand rules before comparing decisions across hold’em, Omaha or lowball. The format determines what a strong hand means and how betting works.
